Sports Medicine for Student Athletes
Athletics are an integral part of forming the health of our students which is essential to our mission. Our Athletic Trainer plays a vital role in caring for student-athletes through injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and recovery, ensuring that each athlete can train and compete safely and responsibly. Working closely with coaches and families, the trainer helps students develop habits of discipline, attentiveness to their bodies, and respect for the demands of physical excellence.

Concussion Policy
If a student-athlete sustains a concussion, they are restricted from sport participation until clearance from a physician is obtained. This allows the brain to recover without the risk of re-injury. Early diagnosis and treatment of concussions typically results in faster, more complete healing. The Counseling department, and teachers are informed of the head injury in order to fully support the student during their period of recovery. Once the athlete is symptom-free and is cleared by a physician to start the Return to Play Protocol, the athlete will complete a 6-step graduated protocol before resuming full activity. This Protocol is supervised by the athletic trainers at JPG. The athletic trainer is responsible for making all return to play decisions.
Injuries
Most injuries are ones that can be treated quickly in the athletic training room. My ultimate goal is to see your student-athlete return to play as quickly, and safely as possible. At times some injuries will require further diagnosis by a doctor. Whether I have referred your student-athlete to a doctor OR you choose to seek further medical care for your athlete. I will need a written and signed report from the doctor with the following information:
1. What the injury is
2. Any limitations your student-athlete has
3. A SPECIFIC date when they can return to play
4. If they need to return to see the doctor for follow-up or full release note
This is a CHSAA Bylaw (CHSAA Bylaw 1780.2) and I CANNOT LET YOUR STUDENT- ATHLETE RETURN TO PLAY UNTIL I HAVE A WRITTEN RELEASE FROM THE TREATING PHYSICIAN
Pre-Participation Physical Examinations
According to CHSAA bylaw 1780.1. Students registering for Athletics must have a current physical examination on file with the Athletic Trainer before the student is authorized to participate in practice/tryouts. To ensure clearance for participation, physicals should be completed and turned in to the Athletic Trainer no later than 3 school days prior to the first day of practice/tryouts. Physicals are valid for 365 days from the date of the last exam.
It is highly recommended to schedule a physical with your primary care physician to help rule out any preexisting conditions, primarily cardiac conditions before sports participation. However if you cannot get an appointment before sports start most urgent cares and clinics will do sports physicals for $40-$50 and do not need an appointment.
Beginning July 2025, the following PPE form is the ONLY form the CHSAA membership will accept for the documentation of physical exams.
